چکیده

The acoustic signal cues the sounds of spoken language in many ways. Thus, voicing in stop consonants is signalled chiefly by a combination of Voice Onset Time and Fundamental Frequency at voicing onset (Llanos et al., 2013, among others), whereas human listeners distinguish vowels by their duration as well as by the spectral values of their steady-state part (e.g., Ylinen et al., 2009). The weighting of such multiple cues during sound perception has been repeatedly shown to depend on the language or dialect of the listener, and changes in weighting can lead to a reorganisation of a jalgsage’q qmsld qwqrek (Pmdjinqiý, 2009).

The psychological reality of phonological representations: The case of Mandarin fricatives

This study investigates the psychological reality of the phonological representations of two Mandarin fricatives [s] and [ɕ] by comparing these sounds with a contrastive sound [f], and with the same sounds in Korean in which the two sounds are allophonic. Three tasks were employed to test contrast/allophony in perceiving and processing [ɕ] and [s]: discrimination on a continuum, similarity rati...

The influence of phonemic awareness development on acoustic cue weighting strategies in children's speech perception.

In speech perception, children give particular patterns of weight to different acoustic cues (their cue weighting). These patterns appear to change with increased linguistic experience. Previous speech perception research has found a positive correlation between more analytical cue weighting strategies and the ability to consciously think about and manipulate segment-sized units (phonemic aware...

Discrimination of speech sounds by children with dyslexia: comparisons with chronological age and reading level controls.

Previous studies have shown that children suffering from developmental dyslexia have a deficit in categorical perception of speech sounds. The aim of the current study was to better understand the nature of this categorical perception deficit. In this study, categorical perception skills of children with dyslexia were compared with those of chronological age and reading level controls. Children...

The Effect of Transcribing on Beginning Learners’ Phonemic Perception

A large number of studies dealing with phonology have focused their attention on phonological production at the expense of phonological perception which provides the foundation stone for phonological production. This study focuses on phonological perception at phonemic level. The purpose of the study is helping beginning learners improve their perception of the English phonemes which are confus...

Review of neural rehabilitation programs for dyslexia: how can an allophonic system be changed into a phonemic one?

Neural investigations suggest that there are three possible core deficits in dyslexia: phonemic, grapho-phonemic, and graphemic. These investigations also suggest that the phonemic deficit resides in a different mode of speech perception which is based on allophonic (subphonemic) units rather than phonemic units. Here we review the results of remediation methods that tap into each of these core...
